Local Student Wins National Scholarship

Matthew C. Hamilton, a Salesianum School senior and member of the De Sales Chapter of the National Honor Society, has been named a recipient of a National Honor Society (NHS) scholarship sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Two hundred national NHS winners were chosen from among more than 8,000 applications. Each national winner will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.

"Matt is one of our finest students, a real model of what we call a Salesian gentleman. We are excited that the NASSP has recognized Matt's talents and abilities," said Fr. John Fisher, O.S.F.S., principal of Salesianum.

Participating high school National Honor Society chapters from across the country nominated two senior high members to compete in this year's program. Winners were selected on the basis of their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs; achievements in the arts and sciences; employment experience; and academic record. They also were required to write an essay.

"We are proud to recognize Matthew Hamilton, who has demonstrated not only academic excellence, but also excellence in service, leadership, character and citizenship," said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP. "He is an excellent example of the high caliber students we have in our nation's secondary schools."

In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the NHS scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.

While at Salesianum School, Matthew Hamilton has been involved in Campus Ministry, swimming, yearbook, and service to Nativity Preparatory School. This fall he plans to attend Boston College to study history.

The National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations recognizing outstanding middle level and high school students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. NHS and NJHS are proudly sponsored by the National Association of Second School Principals (NASSP). The NASSP - the pre-eminent organization and national voice of middle level and high school leaders Ð also sponsors the National Association of Student Councils (NASC), which promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities.

Salesianum School educates and develops the whole person based on the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales whose philosophy can be summarized in "Live Jesus."
