Salesianum Wins Most Awards in Philadelphia Debate

The International Relations program of St. Hubert High School, Philadelphia, hosted their 3rd annual Model UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) on Saturday, 29 January 2006. Two hundred students from thirteen Delaware Valley area high schools participated in the day long simulation of various ECOSOC committees: e.g., Human Rights Commission, Criminal Justice Commission, Narcotic Drugs Commission, Commission on the Status of Women, Commission on Science and Technology, World Health Organization and the World Trade Organization.

Mrs. Sheila Clark served as the host school's moderator and Colleen Siddall, a senior at St. Hubert HS, served as the student Secretary General. The keynote was speaker Dr. Stephen Medvec, professor of Political Science at Holy Family University, Philadelphia.

In the academic debate competition on the committee level, Salesianum School captured most of the debate awards. Twenty-eight Salesianum students won first place gavels, outstanding delegate certificates or received honorable mention. The gavel winners were: Bill Cammarota, Pat Burke, Vincent Jacono, John O'Brien, Adam Kirsch, Chris Manieri, Tom Samper, Joe Rendemonti, Carl Shimel, Bill Sieber, Evan Heisman, Tim Mecure and Tom Schrandt.

Salesianum School is a Roman Catholic independent secondary school that teaches young men to "Live Jesus", guided by the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales, through a college preparatory education, enabling them to take their place in the world as Salesian gentlemen.
