Salesianum Seniors Honored By National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Thomas P. Bounds awarded National Merit $2,500 Scholarship

Salesianum senior Thomas P. Bounds was selected as the winner of a National Merit $2500 Scholarship, and fellow senior Joseph L. Rendemonti was awarded a corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship award.

Bounds' scholarship is underwritten by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation with its own funds. Rendemonti's honors were sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline.

From more than 1.3 million students who entered the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program, only about 16,000 were named Semifinalists. They were designated on a state representational basis, in proportion to each state's percentage of the national total of high school graduating seniors. In order to advance in the competition and be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, a semifinalist had to become a finalist by fulfilling several requirements that included submitting a detailed scholarship application and presenting a record of very high academic performance. All winners of about 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards are being chosen from the group of approximately 15,000 distinguished finalists.

Salesianum School is a Roman Catholic independent secondary school that teaches young men to "Live Jesus", guided by the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales, through a college preparatory education, enabling them to take their place in the world as Salesian gentlemen.
