Salesianum Teacher Honored With Peacemaker Award

Salesianum Religion teacher Thomas Vresics will be honored this evening with the "Peacemaker Among Us" award, as presented by Pacem in Terris.

The Religion Department chairperson at Salesianum, Vresics is being recognized for his programs with teenagers to adults. In his religion classes, he encouraged his students to reach out and "adopt" a young boy in Guatemala, a relationship that continues each year with frequent correspondence and fundraising efforts.

Seven years ago, Vresics began the Salesian Adult Christian Religion Education Day, or SACRED. The program, aimed at adults, includes peace and justice classes as part of its way of deepening their Catholic faith and knowledge of Catholic Social Teachings. The program has now spread to DeSales University in Allentown, Pa., with hopes of expansion to other Oblate Salesian schools.

Last year, Vresics initiated the Seeds of Service program at Salesianum, providing volunteer service openings for students at more than 16 different local agencies, working for the betterment of the community.

Vresics will accept his honors at the Community Hall of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, starting at 6 p.m.

Salesianum School is a Roman Catholic independent secondary school that teaches young men to "Live Jesus", guided by the spirituality of Saint Francis de Sales, through a college preparatory education, enabling them to take their place in the world as Salesian gentlemen.
