Salesianum School Teacher Bill McGowan ‘97 Selected for Prestigious
Madison Fellowship
Salesianum School history teacher Bill McGowan ’97 has been awarded
a James Madison Graduate Fellowship. This award is presented to only one
history teacher in each state and provides for graduate study in field
of U.S. History.
McGowan has been a history teacher at Salesianum for six years, starting
his career at the school after graduating for Mt. St. Mary’s University
on Emmitsburg, MD. In addition to his teaching duties, he is also the
head freshman basketball coach, and junior varsity football coach.
“Bill is already an accomplished teacher, we are very fortunate
to have him here,” said Mrs. Stacy Walls-Bartowski, chair of the
history department at Salesianum School. “The award affirms that
he is truly one of the best young teachers in the state.”
The James Madison Fellowships were created to honor Madison's legacy and
Madisonian principles by providing support for graduate study that focuses
on the Constitution—its history and contemporary relevance to the
practices and policies of democratic government. The benefits of the fellowship
program are manifold and lasting. Fellowship recipients have a unique
opportunity to strengthen their research, writing, and analytical skills.
In the process they form professional ties that can significantly influence
their career aspirations. Fellows gain a deeper understanding of the principles
of constitutional government which they in turn transmit to their students.
Salesianum School is a Roman Catholic independent secondary school that
teaches young men to Live Jesus, guided by the spirituality
of Saint Francis de Sales, through a college preparatory education, enabling
them to take their place in the world as Salesian gentlemen.
