Foreign LanguageIn the modern language classes, the emphasis is placed on the communication skills of speaking and understanding the spoken target language, re-enforcing these skills with reading comprehension and correct written expression. Since the various languages reflect cultural differences in our global society, the culture of the target language is presented and discussed in conjunction with the vocabulary and structures being presented within each unit of study. To this end, videos and audio-cassettes provide the students the opportunity to learn by seeing and hearing native speakers in the natural settings of the foreign countries where the languages are spoken. The recent addition of laptop podiums and Internet access in the classrooms provides even more exposure to actual current events taking place in the target cultures. Salesianum offers four years and Advanced Placement courses in French, German, Latin and Spanish. Students are required to complete at least two consecutive years of the same language for graduation, and it is strongly recommended that they complete three to four years of foreign language study. This is especially important when considering degree requirements at many of the universities they may later attend. Those students staying with a language for four years may take the Advanced Placement course and AP Exam in May. Faculty: Fr.
