College Essays

Some tips for writing a resume:

• Brainstorm an essay topic
  • Why are certain things your favorite?
  • What distinguishes you from others?
  • What are your greatest strengths?
• Be sure to answer the question
• Try to be original
• Be yourself
• Have your essay proofread by others

Try to have the essay reflect who you are. How have you learned to handle negative situations or how you have made the most of the opportunities presented to you . What is your attitude toward learning and what degree of intellectual curiosity do you possess. Don't just describe an event or activity, rather tell what you learned from the experience. Recommendations
You should ask at least one teacher for a recommendation. You should ask them by the end of April of your junior year.  Let the teacher know what the timeline is for completing the recommendation. The teachers will turn in the recommendations to the Guidance office and we keep them on file and submit them with each application. You do not have to ask the teacher to write a separate letter for each college to which you apply. If you work, play a sport and/or are involved in an activity, you may want to ask your employer, coach or moderator for a letter. That would be considered a personal reference or character letter. It does not replace a request from the college for a teacher recommendation. Please bring that letter to the office and we will include it with each application.

Teachers will normally ask you for additional information that is useful in writing your letter. It is your responsibility to give them a copy of your resume listing your in-school and outside activities and accomplishments. If the college has a form that the teacher is requested to complete, turn that in with your transcript request form.
