All of the above materials except the CD’s should be brought to class every day, unless otherwise directed. The CD’s should be kept with your CD player, where you can listen to them when you need them for your homework assignment. You want to spend 20 to 30 minutes every day reading, hearing, speaking and/or writing German.
Grading-
Quizzes and individual projects will be given from time to time on a specific group of vocabulary words or a certain structural concept. Tests will be given at the end of most units. They will be announced at least two days in advance, and carry the grade weight of 2 quizzes.
Homework preparation and class participation comprise 25%, or one quarter, of the quarter grade average. If you consistently do your homework, this average will significantly help your overall average. If you don’t do the daily work, or do only part of it, your average will suffer. Remember: Learning a language is like learning a sport or musical instrument; you have to practice, practice, practice!!
The Salesianum grading curve can be found in your student handbooks, but distinctions are made between the phases, such as the extent of required vocabulary, amount and difficulty of homework, complexity of sections of test and quizzes, and occasional extra assignments required of phase 4, which are available as extra credit for phases 2 and 3.
Make-Up Work-
Quizzes, projects and tests will be made up or turned in no later than one cycle from the day of return to class. If you are absent only the day before the quiz or test, you will take the test with the class. Otherwise, the work will be made up during an open time or before or after school, as we arrange it.
You meet with me as a class only 5 out of 7 days, so it imperative that you assume responsibility for learning the material prescribed in the curriculum for this first year course. Find a study partner, come to me with concerns and difficulties, and I can help you, or a German honor society member can work with you. I am in Room A110 every day before and after school – come on in and visit!
Let’s have a great year – und lernen wir viel Deutsch!
