German 3 Course Overview

Textbooks:    Die Suche, Langenscheidt

Grading –

Quizzes will be given from time to time on a grammar unit of study, or on the content and new structures contained in one or more chapters of Die Suche. There will be several essay assignments or independent projects given each quarter, which will also equal quiz grades. Homework preparation/class participation will count as 25%, or one quarter, of the quarter grade. There should be 8 or 9 quiz grades to average together each quarter for the remainder of the quarter average.

Both phase 3 and 4 will follow the grade system found in the Salesianum Student Handbook. Distinctions between the two phases will include the extent of vocabulary and accuracy of expression in written assignments, as well as the complexity and length of sections of some quizzes and amount of homework assigned.

I will try to provide the assignments for at least a whole cycle or unit of study at a time, so that you will know well in advance when quizzes are given, essays are due, and what books are needed on a given day in class. If you are absent only the day before the assigned quiz or paper is due, you will take the quiz, or be expected to hand in the paper with the rest of the class.

Essays will be given a letter grade based on the correctness of expression, appropriate use of the vocabulary and structures, and of course, the quality, depth and organization of your thoughts in addressing the theme in the target language. The letter grade will then be converted into a numerical value for averaging purposes. For example, on an essay, A+=99, A=97, A- =94, and B+=92, B=89, B- = 86, and so forth. Since I will mark your essays with the editorial abbreviations we used in previous years, rather than writing out the corrections; if you wish to improve your essay grade, you may re-write it with your own corrections and re-submit it for a better grade. The improved version must be submitted no later than one cycle from the day the first version was handed back to you. If your first version is handed in to me late, you will not have the privilege of correcting it for a better grade. All essays must be submitted in the form of a print-out of a saved document from your computer – double spaced – that will be much easier for you and me to make notes and corrections.

Quizzes must also be made up no later than one cycle from the day of return to class.

I will be in room A110 before and after school to offer assistance – come in and visit!

Alles Gute im kommenden Schuljahr!
