WORLD HISTORY-2 (313) COURSE REQUIREMENTS (2007-20078) MR. LUBERTI

A survey of the main trends and developments in the history of man from ancient times to the present. Emphasis is placed on the history of western civilization, with highlights of other cultures also considered.

Materials
Textbook: World History
Notebook: pocket folder with loose-leaf paper
Plan Book
Students should bring textbooks & notebooks to class every day. Textbooks are the tools of the students, which are to be used at home every night and in class every day. Students are not to write in their textbooks unless told to do so by the teacher, or they will not be able to sell them at the end of the year.

Grading
Written quizzes will be given at the end of each textbook chapter. These will always be announced in advance, but it is necessary to be prepared daily. Written tests will be given at the end of each textbook unit and will count more than quizzes. These will always be announced at least two days in advance. There will usually be at least 5 quizzes and 2 tests per marking period.
Class participation is an extremely important part of the course. It may affect the quarter grade by adding one point to or subtracting one point from the quarter grade. Don’t just wait until you are called on to answer questions in class.
A (93-100), B (85-92), C (77-84), D (70-76), F (0-69)
Usually, quizzes will be worth 25% of the quarter grade, tests will be worth 50% and homework will be worth 25%. This will depend however, on the total number of quizzes and tests which may vary from quarter to quarter.

Make-up work
There will be a make-up test/quiz period once or twice a month after school (G6). Quizzes and tests must be made up after an absence or the student will receive a “0”. If the student is absent the day before a test or quiz and returns to school on the day of the test or quiz, he must take the test or quiz that day unless he has a written excuse from his parents. The student is also responsible for finding out what work he missed and what needs to be made up. This also applies to absence from class due to driver’s ed and guidance appointments. When a student is absent from class for any reason, he should contact the teacher by e-mail (rluberti@salesianum.org) to find out what the assignment for the day will be and/or to attach to an e-mail any work which is due on the day of his absence.

Homework
Students should spend at least 30 minutes each night on World History homework. Much of the homework will be reading and reviewing the new material covered in class in the textbook, writing answers to questions in the textbook, and re-doing written homework or memorizing important facts, dates and geography.
All homework assignments will be added together to form a test grade for each marking period. Each student will begin each marking period with 100 homework points. When homework is checked, the following number of points will be subtracted from the 100 points: -5 points if the student does not have his homework (even if it is in his locker or at home!), -3 points if the assignment is incomplete, -1 point if the assignment is passable, -0 points if it is acceptable. For example, if a student does not have his homework five times in one marking period, but the rest of his assignments are acceptable, he will earn a quarter homework grade of 75 (which will be averaged into other test and quiz grades for the quarter).
Problems
Students having problems understanding the material should ask the teacher for help after class or after school. We can also arrange for tutoring. Visit the textbook website (www.phschool.com) for sample quiz/test questions.

Extra credit
Only if students are cooperative and working to the best of their ability will they have the opportunity for extra credit once every marking period. This will involve going to museum exhibitions or watching historical films or reading chapters of the textbook, which we ordinarily skip due to time constraints, and then answering questions about them. Students will receive 10 points, which will be added to their lowest test grade for the marking period, provided they answer their questions correctly.
Audiovisuals
Only if students are cooperative and working to the best of their ability will they have the opportunity to view slides or videos from The Western Tradition series. This will usually take place on the letter day when class meets during the fourth period.

Classroom rules/regulations
Students will not be permitted to go to their lockers once class has begun, so they should bring textbooks, notebooks, written assignments, pencils, etc. with them daily.
Students who do not have pencils on test or quiz days will not be permitted to take the test or quiz and will receive a “0”.
Students will not be permitted to go to the restroom once class has begun, except for extreme emergencies.
Students who are not in their seats when the bell rings for class to begin will be sent to the Main Office for a late pass.
Students who fall asleep in class will be asked to stand.
Students are not to touch windows or blinds or anything else in the classroom and they should not write on the desks.
Tests and quizzes will be returned to students as soon as possible after they are taken, so students should not ask the teacher when they will be returned.
