COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The first two years of Spanish aim to develop in the student an active, flexible basis in the target language, as well as an appreciation of the cultures of Hispanic people. With the aid of modern multi-media, students see and hear native speakers in natural settings. The textbook, workbook and class activities reinforce and enhance comprehension of vocabulary and structures to be learned.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

• To learn basic vocabulary and concepts
• To develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills
• To emphasize the speaking skills above all
• To be able to work together in pairs and groups
• To appreciate Hispanic cultures

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

A. Materials:
1. Textbook: ¡EN ESPANOL ! Level 1 copyright 2004
2. Workbook: MAS PRACTICA ¡EN ESPANOL! Level 1
3. Notebook (spiral with pocket and/or folder): to include homework, classwork ,class notes, handouts, etc.
4. Pencils: # 2 for apperson tests and quizzes
5. Pens: blue or black ink
6. A marker pen to correct assignments

B. Grading:
Grading is based on a point system. Quarter grades consist of tests, quizzes and homework. You are expected to be prepared to actively participate in class. In order to thoroughly grasp Spanish, it must be used on a daily basis. Nobody is exempted from the mid-term or final exam.

C. Homework: Its purpose is to reinforce what you learned in class and to prepare you for tests and quizzes. Homework is assigned regularly, both written and study. It will be checked or collected at random. I place the homework on netclass as well as on the board.
• NOTE: partial credit will be given for late and incomplete assignments as long as they are handed in by the next time your class meets.


D. Absence: You are responsible for finding out and making up whatever work you have missed. The number of days absent plus one day equals the number of days you have for makeup. You won’t be able to make up work during class time. You must do that before or after school.

E. EXTRA HELP:

I am available before or after school and during most G6 periods. You’ll need to let me know ahead of time when I can expect you.

F. CLASSROOM POLICIES:

1. It is your responsibility to be familiar with the rules, regulations and consequences of behavior as outlined in the student handbook.
2. Gentlemanly behavior is required at all times. Nothing else will be tolerated. Respect is due yourself, one another and the teacher.
3. You must bring your books and materials to class every day, including testing days. You are only permitted to go to your lockers in between classes.
4. Raise your hand and wait to be acknowledged. Don’t call out.
5. Maintain assigned seating until the bell rings. The teacher will take care of handling the windows and blinds.
6. Bathroom and other needs are to be taken care of as much as possible before the bell rings to keep interruption of the class at a minimum.
