Course objectives

The objective of the second year of Spanish is to build and amplify the basis in Spanish language acquired in the firs year – learning new grammar structures, adding new phraseology and vocabulary, correct pronunciation, ability to communicate actively in Spanish, to read and listen as well as to appreciate the Spanish-speaking cultures of the world. In the classroom activities we will practice all of these aspects with the focus on the active usage of the foreign language.
With help of modern audiovisual technology, we will listen to native speakers in different situations of life and learn how to react actively.

Course requirements

     1. Materials
Textbook: En español 2
Workbook: En español 2 – Más práctica
Notebook with folder divided in 3 sections for vocabulary, grammar and homework
All of these materials should be brought to class each day.

     2. Grading and testing
Your quarter grade will consist of an average of your tests, quiz grades, oral quizzes, oral presentation, homework and participation.
Tests and quizzes may be written and/or oral. There will be tests at the end of each section and at the end of each unit as well.
Tests will be announced at least three days in advance. However, there might be some small oral or written tests/quizzes every day - students are expected to come prepared for each class.
The seven point grading scale [93-100, etc..] stated in the handbook will be used to determine your quarter grade.

     3. Homework
It is very important to be always prepared for the class so you can actively participate in all activities. Homework will be assigned daily and will consist of written work or/and materials to be studied [new vocabulary, grammar structures]. You should enter your assignment in your plan book before you leave the class. In order to receive credit for your written assignment it must be:
1. complete, 2. neat and legible, 3. in your notebook labeled. Copying of homework from other students is not allowed and can lower your grade or result in a zero credit.

     3. Classroom behavior
In order to maintain a positive learning environment in our classroom, you are expected to follow the discipline policies stated in the Student Handbook.
Always be respectful and attentive both to the teacher and your classmates, their ideas and their property.
Disturbing class such as calling out and talking with someone while the teacher or another student is talking are not allowed.
Copying of homework or copying during the exams, tests are not allowed and will result as a zero credit for the test/quiz/homework.
Restrooms visits will be made during the brakes between the classes.
No food, drinks or chewing gum are allowed during the classes.
Vulgar, immoral or indecent language, writings, pictures, signs or acts will not be tolerated.
You are expected to be punctual and to come prepared for each class and also to bring all books, materials, writing utensils and completed assignments.

     4. Absences
If you are absent due to illness, early dismissal, driver’s education, guidance appointments, retreats etc., you are responsible to finding out what you have missed in the time of your absence and making up for the missed assignments. Quizzes and tests will be made up no later than two cycles from the day of return to class. If you are absent only the day before an announced test, you will take the test with the rest of the class.

     5. Teacher's availability
I am available for help before and after school to offer assistance – come and visit me.
