Course Objective
1. To build a firm foundation of basic vocabulary and grammar to begin communication not only in class but in the ‘real world’
2. To gain respect for and knowledge of Spanish-speaking countries and their cultures, as well as those Spanish-speaking individuals in the United States
3. To develop self-confidence as you have fun learning a foreign language and actively participating in class
Materials
ALL students will purchase the following text/workbooks:
1. Textbook: En Español 1a, McDougal Littell
2. Workbook: Más Práctica 1a, McDougal Littell
3. Schaum’s Workbook
In addition, we will make use of:
1. www.conjuguemos.com
2. the En Español website www.classzone.com
3. ancillary worksheets
4. a dictionary
Expectations
1) Students will be expected to speak primarily in the target language when possible and will lose participation points if this expectation is not met. No one will lose points for trying!
2) Students are expected to bring their textbooks, workbooks, notebooks, pens or pencils and/or extra papers to class each period. This includes your SALESIANUM PLANNER. Students will not be permitted to go to their lockers to obtain materials and will receive an immediate zero for missed work.
3) Eating and drinking are not permitted!
4) Use the bathroom or get a drink BEFORE you arrive to class. The five (5) minutes you have between classes is sufficient to handle this business.
5) You are responsible for your assignments in case of an absence. Long term projects (those that had a week or more notice) will be due the day you return. There are many avenues to retrieve daily assignments: my email, a classmate, a sibling and hopefully my website.
6) ALL students will be required to buy a notebook and dividers by Tuesday, Sept. 4th (Thursday, Sept. 6th for Section 2). This notebook will be discussed in the next section.
7) As Salesian gentlemen, you will respect one another, yourself, Salesianum School and me.
Notebook
One of the most important tools I can teach you in preparation for college is the use of an organized notebook. This will be graded each marking period. Your notebook must be divided into the five sections below:
I. Apuntes (Notes): You will keep all your notes taken from Power Point slides or the board in this section.
II. Fichas (Worksheets): Any supplementary vocabulary or grammar worksheets I give you will be placed in this section.
III. Actividades de clase y tarea (Class/Homework): This is the section in which you will do written homework or classwork not found on a worksheet or in a workbook.
IV. Leyendas (Readings) y Composiciones (Writings): My plan is that we will be doing reading and writing right from the beginning. You’ll put them here.
V. Exámenes/Examencitos (Quizitos): Put any test or quiz in this section after it is returned.
Grading Policy:
Tests/Quizzes 25%
Compositions/Projects/Conversaciones 25%
Participation 20%
Cuaderno 15%
Classwork/Homework 15%
It is my duty and honor
to educate you in the example of St. Francis de Sales. I would be doing you
a disservice if I did not hold you to the highest academic standard. Cheating
of any kind, including copying homework/classwork, “cheat sheets”
or wandering eyes on tests/quizzes, or using an online translator will be dealt
with according to the Student Handbook.
I have read and understand all the policies explained in this syllabus.
