Course Description (from Salesianum School course catalog)

The Spanish 4 course continues to cover original and abridged works of Spanish and Latin American writers, as well as history and culture in the Spanish language. Grammar is reviewed and conversational vocabulary is enlarged. Supplemental materials are used to provide stimulus for speaking everyday Spanish in the classroom. It is expected that discussion of the material be carried on in the target language with a greater degree of fluency than in the third year.

Course Objective

It is my goal and steadfast plan that students will continue to expand both their knowledge and use of grammar (verbs tenses and advanced sentences) as well as vocabulary. This expansion will also include assistance in filling the gaps left from previous years; however, if marked gaps are present, students should come after school for additional extensive help. Strong emphasis will be placed on conversation, reading and writing.

Materials

ALL students will purchase the following text/workbooks:
1. Textbook: Siempre Adelante, Jorge Cubillos, Heinle and Heinle: 2000
2. Workbook: Siempre Adelante, 2000
3. 2 blue books (purchased in Salesianum Bookstore)

In addition, we will make use of:

1. www.conjuguemos.com
2. the Siempre Adelante website
3. ancillary worksheets
4. a dictionary

Expectations

1) Students will be expected to speak primarily in the target language and will lose participation points if this expectation is not met. No one will lose points for trying!
2) Students are expected to bring their textbooks, workbooks, notebooks, and/or extra papers to class each period. Students will not be permitted to go to their lockers to obtain materials and will receive an immediate zero for missed work.
3) ALL students will be required to buy a notebook and dividers by Monday. This notebook will be discussed in the next section.
4) As Salesian gentlemen, you will respect one another, yourself, Salesianum School and me.

Notebook

One of the most important tools I can teach you in preparation for college is the use of an organized notebook. This will be graded each marking period. Your notebook must be divided into the five sections below:

I. Fichas de Gramática (Grammar worksheets): At the beginning of each chapter I will provide you with a packet of notes covering the grammar in that chapter.
II. Fichas de vocabulario (Vocabulary worksheets): Although the chapter vocabulary is presented at the beginning of the chapter, we will use this section for either expanded or catch up vocabulary.
III. Actividades de clase y tarea (Class/Homework): This is the section in which you will do written homework or classwork not found on a worksheet or in a workbook.
IV. Leyendas (Readings): In this section you will keep any additional readings I give you.
V. Exámenes/Examencitos (Quizitos): Put any test or quiz in this section after it is returned.

Diarios

Diarios (or journals) are a great resource for you to better your writing. They will stay in the classroom, and you will write in them in accordance with a prompt. These diarios will not be graded stringently. I will mainly be looking for proof that you attempted to answer the question using appropriate level vocabulary and grammar. In addition, I want to know if you can ‘make sense’.

Composiciones

At the end of each chapter there will be a composition pertaining to the relevant subject. You will be well aware of the due dates for these compositions and will lose 10 points for each day late. You will have a chance to revise these compositions for extra points. I will keep these compositions in your file, so that much like the diarios, you can view your progress.
