Salesianum remembers Jim “Wild Bill” Haley

Salesianum remembers Jim “Wild Bill” Haley

Jim "Wild Bill" Haley

When he first interviewed for a teaching position at Salesianum, Jim Haley left quite an impression on his potential employer, Fr. Tom Lawless — literally.

“With great trepidation I sat down opposite Fr. Lawless to fill out my application at his desk,” Jim said in 2005. “My anxiety over starting a new career caused me to press harder than usual on the paper. Imagine my chagrin when I handed my papers back to Fr. Lawless, only to discover that I had engraved the details of my resume on his desktop. Fr. Lawless pretended not to notice, but I couldn’t help thinking that I left a
deep impression on him in ways that I had not foreseen.”

When he retired 37 years later, Jim – who was affectionately nicknamed “Wild Bill Haley” by students and staff alike – had now left that same impression on more than a few thousand students.

Deacon James Haley, Hon., member of Salesianum’s Hall of Fame, passed away on Aug. 30 surrounded by his family.

A graduate of Archmere in 1944 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1947, Jim joined the seminary and considered a career serving God. When he left in 1954, Salesianum was a logical choice, since he could continue to serve the church and help a school undergoing growing pains. After a few years of teaching Latin, English, algebra and religion, Jim finally settled into teaching history courses. His reasoning – history would allow him to have humanity to read and learn about the rest of his life.

A devout man of family and faith, Jim would become a permanent deacon in 1980. He and his wife Kathleen sent two sons to Salesianum – James J. Haley, Jr. ’80 and Brendan Haley ’82. Brendan followed in his footsteps at Salesianum in 1993, joining the faculty as a math teacher and later the varsity basketball coach. Their daughter, Desales, also had a unique tie to Salesianum with her forename.

After Salesianum, Haley continued his work as a deacon and an outreach coordinator at St. John the Beloved Parish. An honorary alumnus, he was selected to Salesianum’s Alumni Hall of Fame in 2005. When Salesianum’s House Program begain in 2011, Haley was recognized for his contributions to the school (along with fellow lay Colleague and science teacher Earl Carpenter) with the formation of the Haley-Carpenter House.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Haley family. A link to the official obituary will be made shortly. The funeral arrangements are as follows:

Viewing:

Wednesday, Sept. 4 from 6-8 p.m. – St. John the Beloved church

Mass of Christian Burial:

Thursday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. – St. John the Beloved Church

Memorial Mass - Wednesday, Nov. 2
Monday, October 24, 2011

The month of November is traditionally set aside in the Catholic community as the time when we remember those who have gone before us in faith. Here at Salesianum, we collect the names of the deceased and place them on the altar in our school chapel where they remain for the entire month. Throughout the month, we pray for these loved ones. We also celebrate a special mass when we pray for all the deceased and read aloud the names of those who have died in the last year.

On Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 we will gather for this year’s Memorial Mass (7 p.m., Centenary Hall). We hope you can join us as we gather in prayer. We intend to read aloud the names of the Salesianum alumni who have died in the past year.

To submit your list of lost loved ones to Salesianum, please email alumni@salesianum.org with the subject “Memorial Mass.” This will assure your loved ones are remembered here at Salesianum.

If you’re planning to attend the Memorial Mass, please contact Nancy Meier at (302) 655-1072 or nmeier@salesianum.org with your positive response by Monday, Oct. 31. This will enable us to provide sufficient refreshments after the mass.
