College Counselor Position

Responsibilities:

The College Counselor is a 12-month employee who reports to the Director of Guidance and is one of three counselors responsible for administering all aspects of the college search and admissions process, including the following:

  • Educating a portion of junior and senior students and parents about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing; advising and supporting seniors and their families as they go through the admissions process; helping students and families aspire realistically and choose wisely.
  • Meeting with students, individually and in groups, to talk about process and individual college choices. Teaching a Junior Advisory class regarding the college admission process. Advising 9th and 10th graders on curricular choices, as needed.
  • Meeting with college admissions representatives who visit our campus and facilitating meetings between college representatives and our students.  The College Counselor also serves as a liaison with College admissions offices throughout the year.
  • Writing official school recommendations for Seniors.  To do so, the Counselor gathers information from parents, teachers, school records, and students themselves.  The College Counselor also completes all School Report and mid-year report forms requested by colleges, including evaluations of students.
  • Presenting to parents at various parent centric events throughout the year, including but not limited to grade-level presentations, admission events and college/financial aid nights. 
  • Organizing, administering, maintaining and disseminating information about standardized tests such as SAT and ACT, administering the AP and PSAT exams.


Qualifications:

Necessary skills include excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong organizational ability and the ability to meet deadlines.  Experience in selective college admissions or high school college counseling is a must, teaching experience, and computer skills are a plus.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; familiarity with the goals, objectives, and mission of an independent college preparatory school; the ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse and demanding student and parent population; knowledge of colleges, their academic programs, admission policies, and financial policies and procedures.

Professional Development:

Due to the technical nature and frequently changing nature of college admissions, attendance at professional development seminars, conferences, workshops, and meetings sponsored by the College Board, NACAC, PCACAC, ACT and/or individual colleges may be required.

Teaching Position: Mandarin Chinese
