It's been 68 years since an extraordinary moment in Delaware history occurred, ushered in by the most ordinary of events. On Tuesday, Nov. 14, 1950, five African American young men — Thomas and Alfred Connell, James Owens, Fred Smith, and Bill Jones — walked through the door at the original Salesianum School on the corner of Eighth and West streets. They were greeted by the principal, the Rev. Father Thomas A. Lawless, the only person other than their parents who knew they were coming. Recently, James Owens and Fred Smith returned to campus to share their perspectives on what it was like to be on the forefront of desegration, issues of racism and the importance of inclusivity.  Follow this link to read Salesianum principal, Fr. Chris Beretta's, OSFS, recent Delaware Online column.
