Tommy Tyree '23 and Jack Thompson '23 Participate in Delaware Boy's State Program
Congratulations to Tommy Tyree '23 and Jack Thompson '23 for being selected to the Delaware Boy's State. In addition, both boys were elected as state officials—Tommy was the Governor and Jack was the Speaker of the House.
Boy’s State was an unforgettable experience for both Tommy and Jack. Jack said, “Coming into the program, I had an interest in public service, but leaving that week, I had a love for it. Being able to shadow Speaker Schwartzkopf for the week was an honor and gave me insight into the legislative process in Delaware. I was able to sit in on meetings with other legislators, hear the discourse around divisive legislation, and watch compromise happen in real-time. I firmly believe that this program should be mandatory for all who seek to hold public office in the future, and I highly recommend that anyone wishing to be civically literate attends as well.”
The Delaware American Legion Boys’ State is a week-long program that immerses rising seniors in citizenship and leadership training. Students are selected in their junior year through a rigorous application process. During their experience, they learn about the practical aspects of our state government by engaging in political activities such as running for office, electing officials, drafting and debating bills, and making motions. Student representatives had the opportunity to meet and observe state officials—including Governor Carney and Secretary of State Jeff Bullock—to experience government and politics firsthand. They also participated in physical fitness, teamwork, and other activities. This year's event was held at Wesley College.

American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county, and state government, Boys State was founded in 1935 to counter the socialism-inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy, and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
