Congratulations to Trey Williams ’26, who was named a KYW Newsradio Newstudies Program Graduate and was awarded the $2,000 Richard Monetti Scholarship, awarded annually to the student who produces the strongest overall report in the program out of more than 100 participating students. As his final presentation, Trey was featured on KYW Newsradio 1060 on December 7, 2025, delivering a
90-second report on the 75th Anniversary of the Quintus Five.
Trey participated in the KYW Newsradio Newstudies Program, a nationally respected broadcast journalism initiative sponsored by Temple University’s Klein College of Media and Communication. Since 1968, the program has provided high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from across the region with a rare, hands-on opportunity to experience the inner workings of a major-market radio station.
Through the Newstudies Student Reporter Program, participants learn directly from KYW Newsradio managers, editors, and reporters, gaining practical training in reporting, news writing, editing, journalistic ethics, and interviewing skills. The program is held each October over four consecutive Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon and includes three instructional sessions and one on-air recording session at KYW Newsradio. An off-site graduation ceremony is typically held in early December.
To graduate, students must research, write, and record an original news report focused on a story from their school or local community. Each report is broadcast on KYW Newsradio and published digitally online, giving students the unique experience of sharing their work with a wide public audience. The yearly scholarship is named in honor of a Newstudies graduate who passed away in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 and honors a student whose work demonstrates overall excellence. To keep Richard Monetti's memory alive, his family speaks at Newstudies every year.
