Tommy Janton '22 Crowned Swimming National Champion Earning Spot on Team USA Swim Team
Congratulations to Tommy Janton ’22—now a National Champion and USA Swimming World Team member! At the 2025 USA Swimming Championships in Indianapolis, Janton delivered a sensational swim in the men’s 100m backstroke, clocking a blistering 53:00 to claim the national title—the fastest time in the country this year and 11th-fastest in the world.
Janton, who entered the race seeded seventh and swam from the rarely victorious Lane 1, surged from a tie for second at the halfway mark to out-split the entire field on the final leg, securing his place atop the podium. His stunning performance not only earned him the national crown but also qualified him for the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this summer, where he’ll represent the United States in both the 100m backstroke and the Team USA relay. He also competed in the 50m and 200m backstroke events, placing 12th and 10th, respectively.
A rising star and 2024 Olympic Trials finalist (4th in the 200m backstroke), Janton continues to rewrite record books—holding Notre Dame’s school records in both the 100m and 200m backstroke (long course meters and short course yards). At Salesianum, he set school records in the 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard butterfly events and was a key member of the state-record-holding 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams.
