Salesianum Earns Middle States RAIL Endorsement for Responsible AI

Salesianum School has officially earned the RAIL (Responsible AI in Learning) Endorsement in Artificial Intelligence Literacy, Safety, and Ethics from the Middle States Association, recognizing nearly a year of sustained work to integrate artificial intelligence responsibly and ethically across the institution.

The endorsement is the result of a comprehensive self-study led by a team of Salesianum educators and administrators that began during the 2023–2024 school year. Using Middle States’ structured RAIL framework, the team examined how AI intersects with every layer of the school—academics, policies, governance, and culture—reimagining Salesianum in a world where AI is a fundamental part of education.

As part of the process, the team reviewed and developed Salesianum-specific documents through an AI-informed lens, including policies related to ethics, disclosure, and institutional readiness. The work deepened the school’s understanding of AI literacy, student well-being, bias, and digital citizenship, while ensuring all practices remain aligned with the school’s Catholic mission and values.

Salesianum now joins a global network of RAIL-endorsed schools from regions including the United States, Europe, and Asia—and is the only school in Delaware to receive the first available RAIL Endorsement.
“Artificial intelligence can be intimidating, but avoiding it does our students a disservice,” said Bill Sutherland, Director of Instruction at Salesianum School. “Our focus is on digital citizenship—helping students engage AI thoughtfully, ethically, and with their own humanity.”

This milestone affirms Salesianum’s commitment to forming young men prepared to lead, serve, and think critically in a rapidly evolving world shaped by responsible and ethical AI.
